About "How to Get an A"

The How to Get an A program, begun in 2002, employs a multi-disciplinary, whole-person approach to the essential foundations of academic and personal success. Students are given effective methods, guidance, and explanations for all schoolwork strategies, as well as self-awareness for behavioral self-regulation, persistence, and working toward excellence.

Students learn how to push past their "comfort zone", and to establish new habits that will evolve into a new comfort zone. Students learn why and how to pursue excellence through the processes of academic rigor, strategic behavior, and effective self-management. Students learn to manage time as a valuable resource and organize their time with a clear understanding that choices now affect options later. Students like the results, and with the positive response from teachers and parents, their motivation grows.

There is a full writing process, incorporating elements of analytical thinking, syntax and logical progression, which strengthen students' ability to deliver a higher standard work product.

Using bold imagery and accessible language, the energetic How to Get an A program communicates easily with young people and holds their attention. The vivid visuals of the How to Get an A presentation materials, and my coaching methods, are grounded in a sensory approach to creating and reinforcing memory.

The program maintains a sense of humor while honestly addressing teens' real-life needs and concerns. The tone establishes an alliance with kids and their goals, which are to succeed in school, keep their parents happy, and have time with their friends. If a student is an athlete, an artist, or has a passion for pursuing an extracurricular activity, we learn to incorporate that, and set priorities.

In addition to a traditional understanding of academic excellence, I have integrated elements from a wide range of philosophies and disciplines into the creation of the methods, including:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Psychology
  • Developmental & Adolescent Psychology
  • The Science and Psychology of Habits
  • Innovations in Neuroscience
  • Motivational and Sports Psychology
  • Sensory Approach to Memory Creation and Retrieval
  • Character Education
  • Realistic Time Management Strategies
  • Anxiety Management Strategies
  • Yoga Approach to Non-Judgmental Self Awareness
  • Positive Internal Dialogue
  • Leadership and Citizenship Values
  • Health and Wellness in Everyday Life
  • Mainstream Adaptations of Special Needs Strategies
