What Kinds of Students are Right for Private Coaching?

Private coaching is for students, at any level of achievement, who want to raise their grades and manage their time efficiently.

Private coaching is for students who know they are not working up to their full potential, and want to raise their grades, but are frustrated because they don’t know how.

Private coaching is for seriously ambitious students who want to pursue a high level of excellence in their work, and strategize for college goals.

Coaching in the “How to Get an A” methods is very helpful for students who struggle with Executive Function, and need to practice strategies for time management, staying on top of what they need to do, overcoming frustration and anxiety, and dealing with teachers and parents.

Engaging the Student

Personal coaching is tailored to the individual student. The approach is geared to a young person’s result-oriented mentality, with goals of better grades, giving teachers and parents what they want, having a social life, and understanding their world in order to make good decisions. Step-by-step methods and self-awareness techniques are the foundation for replacing unhelpful habits with productive new habits, and developing a new comfort zone.

We address the student's concerns, discuss their strengths and where they need improvement. Students find that the effective methods and proactive approach to scheduling enable them to overcome procrastination and anxieties, and raise their grades as an authentic expression of their growing maturity. The student learns to strategize realistic time management, and to accommodate extra-curricular priorities wherever possible.

How the Coaching Relationship Empowers Students

I am their coach, not a teacher or a parent. Like an athletic coach, I observe the way students play the game, and give them constructive feedback on how they can improve. I explain to students what matters to their teachers and their parents, and how to “give them what they want”. Humor plays a significant role in my materials and my personal approach.

I encourage students to ask any and all questions and to continue to request explanations until they fully understand. My step-by-step methods, vividly illustrated materials, and tell-it-like-it-is honesty hold their attention, while my insight and empathy make the student feel heard and respected.

I foster a rigorous approach to work and self-management, while integrating the student's priorities and concerns into the plan. Kids can admit to their flaws, negative attitudes and unproductive behavior without fear that I will think they are bad people. Kids often believe, incorrectly, there is nothing that can be done to change their situations at school, with friends, and at home. We examine inaccurate beliefs, and practice new, positive approaches to work and life. I encourage realistic optimism, and an understanding that change and improvement is a process; we do not expect instant perfection. The ultimate goal is happy, more successful, self-confident student.

I work with students in New York City, Martha's Vineyard, and by Skype.
