Parent & Student Recommendations

"Students are often told to study more, but are never taught HOW to study."

"My son is absolute proof that Lauren Lowenthal's methods work. After working with Lauren and learning her specific methods and strategies, my son was on the honor roll for the first time in his life.  Her materials and presentation are straightforward, and resonate easily with teenagers.  Her methods are easy for them to implement and, most important, produce great results.

My son had never been able to achieve high grades in high school. Lauren taught him the most important life skills of managing time, following assignments, organizing notes and writing papers. She teaches simple tricks for taking notes and cues for listening, which help kids achieve the "A."  These basic skills are essential for success in school, and most important, in life. Our educational system should adopt a program like hers and make it a mandatory course.  It is as important as learning English and Algebra.  Today's kids are pulled in a million directions, with endless distractions, and need to learn how to manage themselves.  My son now knows how to organize himself, how to listen and how to study so he can achieve better grades. Students are often told to study more, but are never taught how to study.  As a direct result of Lauren's lessons and advice, my son was accepted at a great university."

"My children, who have very different needs and strengths, had excellent experiences working with Lauren Lowenthal, both over the phone from Washington, D.C., and in person. I enthusiastically endorse Lauren Lowenthal and her methods. Lauren has developed a comprehensive plan for kids who may be bored or overwhelmed by the demands of school, and need better skills. More important, the kids really enjoy her and do not dread the sessions as they might with regular tutors. She is professional, popular with kids, and gets results. She works with each child at his or her own level, and moves them through a process that they can use again and again.

Lauren is both respectful of and respected by kids, and is very upbeat. There is a strong, can-do work ethic instilled – no giving up until the work is finished, and finished well. Lauren has excellent rapport with teenagers; she forges a partnership that enables her to encourage and reach young people very successfully. She is well informed and knowledgeable about the world teenagers live in. Though she never tries to be one of them, her mix of humor and empathy earns their respect. She is approachable on any problem without embarrassment, and has a unique way of relating to them; she remains a sophisticated adult, inspiring creativity, while maintaining essential high standards and control.

After my daughter worked with Lauren, she created essays of which she was truly proud. This would not have happened without Lauren’s patience, commitment, and knowledge of when to contribute and when to take a step back, her humor and insistence on students’ using practical techniques to improve their works and raise their standards. Lauren helped her to do better research, refine her topic, focus her thoughts as well as identify areas that needed additional research and work. She helped her to expand her vocabulary and showed her how to use the vocabulary in the writing by using practical techniques. She encouraged my daughter to go the extra mile in pursuit of excellence, and taught her how to ask herself the correct probing questions that improved the quality of her work.

Although much of the work took place by telephone, we saw growth and real results. Certainly it is why we continued to work with her long distance when there were coaches and college counselors available here in Washington, DC.

In addition to teaching schoolwork skills and writing, Lauren has extensive experience advising families about college admissions, and helping students prepare applications to both secondary schools and colleges. I recommended her to a friend in Argentina, which was a challenging assignment, and once again, she was a success."

"Lauren Lowenthal worked with our 13-year old son Max, who was experiencing considerable difficulties at school. Although bright, he was finding it difficult to complete his workload on time, had very low self-esteem and was not reaching his potential by far.

Lauren displayed a truly creative approach. There has been significant improvement in Max’s work, which was immediately noticed at school. She reorganized Max’s homework habits and improved his writing skills and vocabulary. They discussed dealing with teachers, using criticism positively, and making the best out of the whole school experience. There is no doubt that our son’s confidence has increased dramatically along with his improved study habits and attitude toward schoolwork.

Lauren has revolutionized Max’s work habits. Our son has learned how to set high standards for himself, how to aspire to them and how to attain them."

"When I met Lauren Lowenthal, I was frustrated because I wanted better grades, but I did not know how to get there. I was intimidated by big assignments, and I did not know how to study for tests well enough to prove that I knew the material.  I needed to learn how to work effectively, and "live up to my full potential." Lauren taught me to set high standards that met, and exceeded, teacher expectations. More important, she taught me how to set and meet my own high standards, which have served me particularly well now that I am in college.

I used to have a difficult time getting started with assignments because I did not know how to fully develop my ideas. I got stuck, and I didn't know how to keep going. Lauren showed me that excellence is achieved through a process, and that includes first drafts are imperfect. Her motto is, "Writing is rewriting."  Her new methods helped me overcome my procrastination, and taught me to think analytically. Lauren introduced me to a writing process that showed me how to formulate and develop my ideas, and how to evaluate and improve my writing. Although I knew I would benefit from starting an assignment early, procrastination was a hard habit to break. Lauren taught me practical methods to cope with the discomfort of breaking several old habits, and gave me new, more constructive ways to manage my work.

The benefits of Lauren's program go far beyond academics. She has been an enormous influence in how I prioritize and manage my time. This has been important in college, where there is so much freedom to do as I please. She also taught me how to face and overcome difficulties without becoming overwhelmed.

Lauren is not a typical teacher or tutor; nobody has ever tried to teach me the valuable lessons she teaches. She is open-minded, funny and honest. Kids who work with her should be open to really doing what she teaches, and try to follow through at school. If they do, they could have the same success I have had. I trusted Lauren's advice, and felt comfortable being my true self with her. Working with Lauren was very gratifying because I saw the results in my work immediately. Her innovative methods have transformed my academic career. My new confidence in my abilities has made school more enjoyable. My grades are higher than ever, which makes the hard work very gratifying."
